[KULA] Teacher Tune Up: Assisting with Straps

This KULA session will begin with a 90 minute practice led by Helen & Demelza. There will then be a short break before we come back for all things assisting!

Over the course of two hours we will continue our exploration of assists & adjustments that we began back in November 2018! However, this KULA is aimed at the skilful use of straps to assist students. We will learn to make quality contact with our students through the use of straps, and offer both ourselves and our students an easeful transition into this slightly more complex means of assisting.

This session will also involve a portion on self assists with the use of a strap, so you can remain well adjusted even when you are riding solo.

These invitational assists are both subtle and informative and can be seamlessly executed in a vinyasa flow class, as well as more passive poses as seen in Yin and Restorative classes. Intuition is key. For those who participated in the MUDRA 200 hour YTT, there will be a little recap from the program, but these sessions are about progressing beyond the program, so expect to learn a lot of new content. Please bring your notebooks!

The straps are intentionally longer than regular straps, and will be provided for the workshop. Demelza will also have extras for those of you that want to purchase one post workshop.

After this workshop, you will have a better understanding of your own unique dosha as well as how to identify the doshas of your class members or clients during one to one sessions. We’ll also discuss daily routines and some possible home remedies and diet suggestions to help balance each dosha. The session will provide an assessment tool that you can use during your initial meeting with a private yoga client, helping you to better assess their needs and create a yoga plan suitable for each individual.'

[KULA] Integrated Subtle Body Anatomy with Karen Kirkness

We are so excited to have Karen Kirkness come and teach at one of our KULA sessions. As always, the session will begin with a practice co-taught by Demelza & Helen. There will be a small break, and the latter half of the session will be with Karen.

In Karen's words, 'In this session, we will explore how the fascial body is organised in pairs of helical fibres, and how these pairs of opposites (dvandvas in Sanskrit) come together at all scales in our anatomy. The session will start with a presentation and continue into participation with hands-on activities, including giving and receiving yoga adjustments. The theoretical session leads into an exploration of anatomy body painting looking at how the upper limbs integrate into the myofascia of the trunk and what this might mean for safe and progressive teaching skills.

About Karen:

Karen's work brings Ayurvedic tissue principles together with Western body science to see anatomy as a creative integration of gross and subtle principles. She has a masters degree in fine art and another in human anatomy, and is currently working on her PhD in medical sciences at the Hull York Medical School. She has been practising yoga since the late 1990s, having discovered Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga as a troubled college student. Over the years, Karen has adapted the classical sequences based on her personal experiences of healing and extensive study of gross and subtle anatomy. Her teaching philosophy is based on helping students shed preconceived notions about their bodies to access their underlying personal vitality through self-study, vigour, compassion, and humour. She lives with her husband and toddler in Edinburgh where together they own and manage Meadowlark Yoga. Her book, Spiral Bound: Integrated Anatomy for Yoga, will be available through Handspring Publishing in early 2020.

[KULA] Kirtan with Dan Gronan

Our May KULA is going to take on a different vibe to our previous Sunday sessions. As requested, we are really happy to be hosting Dan Gronan, Yoga Teacher and Kirtan leader from Glasgow. This KULA will take place on a Friday eve, and there will be no asana practice before. Just straight up Kirtan :)

In Dan's words, ‘Mantra is one of the most powerful - and most commonly used techniques employed by ancient wisdom traditions to free the mind. That’s literally what it means! ‘’Man’’ refers to the mind, and ‘’tra’’ means to free. Mantra music meditation (Known as Kirtan) is a very simple and effective approach to finding clarity out of the chaos of the mind, uplifting and reconnecting you to your natural state of peace!’

Meet Dan:

Prince’s Trust award winner, Dan Gronan praises Yoga, Music, and Community for saving his life! Now he combines these three passions as the pillars of his life and offering to the world. As an inspired, and dedicated student of Yoga, Dan is devoted to delivering the essence of classical Yoga informed by a timeless tradition, as well as evidence-based, therapeutic practices into a diverse and ever-changing population.

Through his training and work sharing therapeutic yoga with additional-needs children and adults, as well as people in the recovery community, Dan feels that Yoga can and must be available for all people.

Dan shares his love for the Bhakti Yoga tradition of India’s Vedic Wisdom culture by weaving Sanskrit Mantra and Story together in accessible ways. He founded ‘’The Mantra Movement Project’’ with a vision to uplift, empower and form community through Mindful Movement and Mantra Meditation Music.

After struggling with his mental health for many years in silence, feeling paralyzed by stigma, Dan felt an urgency to support his fellow men who struggle in plain sight by starting up a monthly safe space for men. ‘’Men of Hope’’ is a donation based Yoga/Meditation, a peer support group aimed at giving men a place to find support and learn a toolbox of techniques for self-soothing under stress. All Proceeds go to Brothers In Arms (Scotland's male mental health and suicide prevention charity)

As a signatory of Scotland’s Mental Health Charter for Physical Activity and Sport (SAMH), Daniel is committed to championing values of equality and creating a safe and supportive environment for all students.

[KULA] Samyama: Climbing the Higher Limbs

The March Edition of KULA will begin as always with a practice led by Helen & Demelza. The Workshop portion of the month will be taught by Nikki & Mark Miller.

Samyama: Climbing the Higher Limbs
The final three limbs of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras concern explicitly the practice of meditation. Dharana (powerful attention), Dhyana (effortless meditation) and Samadhi (deep meditative absorption) are presented as states that create the condition for Self-knowledge to arise free from the distortions and distractions of everyday mind. The aim of this workshop will be to explore the nature of these higher limbs from both a theoretical and practical perspective.

Meet the Teachers:

Nikki Miller is a devoted, passionate, wholehearted student of the Yogas. She is dedicated to sharing and growing in this wisdom with community through teaching yoga asana, meditation, philosophy, and mindful living. Her vast knowledge in alignment, strength, and mobility allows her to help people create happy healthy bodies not only to improve quality of life, but to support the Great Work of our Hearts.

Mark Miller Ph.D. is a philosopher, cognitive scientist and dedicated meditation teacher. Mark's research (at the University of Edinburgh) focuses on the dynamic relationship between mind and brain, the mysteries of consciousness, and the nature of (no)self. Known for his eclectic teaching style, Mark commonly weaves cutting-edge cognitive science with traditional contemplative wisdom, all with aim to provide clear understanding and practical application.  Mark is a devoted student of Culadasa, and a certified teacher in the Dharma Treasure Sangha.

About the workshop:
February's KULA will begin with a practice co-taught by Helen and Demelza. There will be a small coffee break followed by a two-hour session with Acupuncturist, Doula and Yoga Teacher, Lena Fong. Lena's session will provide a brief introduction to the principles of TCM, including a look at the principles and meridians that govern the practice. The emphasis on these sessions is to inform and to translate knowledge learned into a tangible manner. Lena will show teachers how to synergise this knowledge within a yoga practice. We are really excited to be hosting this session and look forward to learning from the Lena in this community environment.

About Lena:
Lena is an empathic and compassionate yoga teacher, doula and acupuncturist. She has over a decade's experience in treating a variety of conditions with acupuncture within clinics in Edinburgh and Northumberland.

Initially studying Chemistry at The University of Edinburgh, she continued her studies with a degree in "Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture" in York. Her Asian background and Hong Kong Chinese parents inspired her to pursue this area. Moreover, she was keen to show how acupuncture has a scientific approach which is not unlike modern day medicine. By sharing her insights to the prevention of illness and the importance of harmonising one's lifestyle has meant her patients enjoy good health. This passion for maintaining a healthy lifestyle led onto further training in yoga (200hrs Hatha Yoga, 200hrs Forrest Yoga, and Aerial Yoga). Her experiences in the acupuncture clinic treating women during pre-conception, pregnancy and postpartum motivated her to become a doula with the "Red Tent Doulas".

Lena is married to Andrew and has two young sons, Lewis and Max. She is also a dog lover and owns a pair of miniature Dachshunds. She keeps healthy by walking and foraging in Scotland's beautiful countryside.

[KULA] A History of Yoga ~ According to Modern Scholarship

Teachers: Helen & Demelza

This KULA session will begin with a 90 minute practice led by Helen & Demelza. There will then be a short break before we come back for all things Yoga history!

Yoga scholarship has been going through a massive overhaul in the last few years thanks to some very exciting projects taking place. The excitement comes in the amazing work going into this field by talented scholars however a lot of pre-existing theory regarding yoga’s timeline is now being challenged, with new information emerging.

Demelza has studied the subject as part of her masters program from 2017-18 at the University of Edinburgh, and continues to study the subject independently post masters. This will be a solid two hours of moving through the now understood timeline of our practice, with an emphasis on the emergence of what we now have as our modern practice.

[KULA] Teacher Tune Up: Assists

Teachers: Helen & Demelza

This KULA session will begin with a 90 minute practice led by Helen & Demelza. There will then be a short break before we come back for all things assisting!

Over the course of two hours we will introduce the MUDRA philosophy as far as hands on assists and adjustments are concerned, and explore a set of assists and adjustments that will be practiced within the group. Both Helen & Demelza look at hands on adjustments within the yoga class as an invitation. Demelza’s assists are heavily influenced by her work and training as a Thai Yoga Masseuse, whilst Helen has been informed by her many trainings including her Restorative YTT, in aiming to offer supportive assists whereby the receiver feels safe and held. These invitational assists are both subtle and informative and can be seamlessly executed in a vinyasa flow class, as well as more passive poses as seen in Yin and Restorative classes. Intuition is key. F L O A T ~ Inversion masterclass

This masterclass is aimed at Yogi's that want to work on their arm balances, in particular, inversions.

Often in a vinyasa class there is not enough time to thoroughly break down each inversion, you may hear "if it's in your practice take a headstand/pincha/handstand etc." However, in this class we will have a whole 2 hours together to prepare, explore & play.

I (Helen) will teach you some of the most valuable techniques I have learned over the years to build strength and get upside down.
Although yoga experience is necessary, a strong inversion practice in not!

This masterclass is part of a Weekend at Gathering Essence with MUDRA.

the cost? £18 (for one masterclass) or £30 for both Demelza and Helen's Masterclasses.

S P A N D A ~ backbend masterclass

This masterclass is with me, Demelza.

It is aimed at Yogi's that want to refine their foundation of backbends ~ safely and spaciously backbend ~ have some fun with some new forms.

A lot of us come to the practice flexible, and without the foundation and understanding of form in a backbend, can commonly injure ourselves. This workshop is built from my own experience of flexibility without a foundation. It is therefore subitable for anyone wanting to approach backbends safely!

So you can get the most out of this practice, it will be an extended flow class suitable for experienced yogis. Expect to be challenged, but to walk away with a better understanding of the body in extension.

This masterclass is part of a Weekend at Gathering Essence with MUDRA.

Surya & Sea ~ Yoga Retreat in Tarifa

Surya & Sea ~ Yoga Retreat in Tarifa

We are very excited to announce that we will be holding a week long Yoga Retreat this September, in the secluded Villa La Pena, located in Tarifa -the southern most tip-of-Spain, where the Mediterranean and the Atlantic meet.

Shala

The retreat venue sits in a stunning elevated position in the La Pena area of Tarifa, nestled between mountain and sea with a panoramic vista over miles of sandy beaches. It faces the Straits of Gibraltar, looking out east across to Morocco's Rif Mountains and west to the Port of Tangiers. There is a distinctly North African feel with the whitewashed streets and there is a general laid back atmosphere around the windswept walled town.

The centre facilities include both an indoor and outdoor pool, beautiful accommodation with air conditioning, a yoga studio with props, and an outdoor yoga & meditation platform, massage room and lots of space inside and out for reading, contemplation and relaxation. For the duration of the retreat, the villa will be OURS - ours being an intimate group of 12 Yogis.

IMG_6440.JPG

The beach is within walking distance and Tarifa town is 5 minutes by car. There are plenty of things to do, and Tarifa is world famous for its watersports whether you fancy kitesurfing or stand up paddleboarding. The ferry to Tangier, Morrocco only takes one hour so there will be the option of a day trip.

Mandala is a method of yoga, a dynamic vinyasa practice cushioned between Yin yoga to both challenge and nourish you. Each sequence is determined by the element we are working with, and follows the lines of meridians determined by the element.

The actual practice of Mandala is strong, and empowering, and participation in this class requires an already existing Yoga practice.

Both of us have studied this Method and are so excited to offer this as a monthly practice. We look forward to sharing this practice and travelling through the elements together. Better yet, its on a Wednesday !

The masterclass will include a full Mandala practice (Yin and Vinyasa)

This is the first MANDALA practice in a series of four, which will take place over summer.
